Feeling Sluggish? 9 Simple Habits That Can Help You Boost Your Energy Naturally
Written by Ryback Reeves
We’ve all had those days where we wake up feeling sluggish, unmotivated, and like we’re running on empty. The easy solution is to keep reaching for more caffeine, but the truth is that lasting energy is built long before you crack open an energy drink or pour your first cup of coffee.
Over the years, I’ve made a lot of changes to my own daily routine, and these habits have made a tremendous difference in my energy, focus, recovery, and overall quality of life. None of them are complicated, but together they can completely change how you feel.
Here are the nine habits I believe make the biggest difference.
1. Make Sleep Your Number One Priority
Everything starts with sleep.
If you’re not getting quality sleep, you’re already starting the day behind. Sleep is when your body repairs itself, your brain recovers, and your hormones reset. No amount of caffeine or supplementation can consistently replace poor sleep.
Aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep whenever possible. Keep a consistent bedtime, make your room cool and dark, and create a nighttime routine that helps you wind down.
The better you sleep, the better you’ll perform in every area of your life.
2. Fix Your Food, Fix Your Mood
I’ve said this for years because I truly believe it.
The food we eat becomes the fuel our bodies use every single day. If we’re constantly eating processed foods, fast food, and meals loaded with low-quality ingredients, we shouldn’t be surprised when our energy crashes.
I personally believe one of the best changes people can make is eliminating, or at the very least greatly reducing, seed oils by cutting back on ultra-processed foods and preparing more meals at home with quality ingredients. Focus on quality protein, vegetables, fruit, healthy carbohydrates, and healthy fats.
When you feed your body better, you’ll often notice improvements in your mood, mental clarity, recovery, and energy.
3. Move Your Body Every Day
Movement creates momentum.
You don’t have to spend hours in the gym to experience the benefits of exercise. Go for a walk, lift weights, ride a bike, stretch, or find a physical activity you genuinely enjoy.
One habit I highly recommend is taking a 10 to 15 minute walk after meals whenever you can. It’s a simple way to support healthy blood sugar regulation, aid digestion, and stay active throughout the day.
Consistency will always beat perfection.
4. Get Outside First Thing in the Morning
One of the easiest habits you can build is stepping outside shortly after waking up.
Even five to ten minutes of natural sunlight can help your body recognize that it’s time to be awake. It also supports your body’s natural sleep and wake cycle, making it easier to have energy during the day and sleep better at night.
Take a short walk, breathe some fresh air, and start your day outside whenever possible.
5. Stay Hydrated
Sometimes feeling tired has nothing to do with sleep.
Even mild dehydration can leave you feeling sluggish, reduce your focus, and make everyday tasks feel harder than they should.
Drink water consistently throughout the day instead of waiting until you’re thirsty. It’s one of the simplest habits you can build, yet one of the most overlooked.
6. Protect Your Peace and Make Time to Quiet Your Mind
Stress is one of the biggest energy drains we face.
That’s why I make time for meditation and affirmations as part of my morning routine. Personally, I meditate for about 15 minutes, five mornings a week. On the weekends, I give myself a break. I also take a break from my affirmations because I believe it’s healthy to let your mind rest and keep these habits enjoyable.
Healthy habits should never feel like punishment. They should become something you look forward to because of how they make you feel.
Whether it’s meditation, deep breathing, prayer, journaling, or simply sitting quietly for a few minutes, investing in your mental well-being can have a powerful impact on your daily energy.
Protect your peace, because your environment and mindset matter.
7. Make Sauna Part of Your Routine
If you have access to a sauna, use it.
Regular sauna sessions have been associated with cardiovascular health benefits and can be a great way to relax, recover, and unwind after training or a long day.
One of the most well-known long-term Finnish studies found that people who used a sauna four to seven times per week had about a 50% lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease compared with those who only used a sauna once per week. The greatest benefits were generally seen in people who stayed in the sauna for more than 19 minutes per session. While these findings show an association rather than proving cause and effect, they’re another great reason to consider making sauna sessions a regular part of a healthy lifestyle.
Personally, I aim for about four 20-minute sauna sessions each week whenever my schedule allows. A healthier cardiovascular system helps your body deliver oxygen and nutrients more efficiently, and taking care of your heart is one of the best long-term investments you can make for your overall health.
Just remember to stay well hydrated before and after each session, and always listen to your body.
8. Use Caffeine the Smart Way
Caffeine isn’t the enemy.
When used responsibly, it can improve focus, alertness, reaction time, and even exercise performance. Research suggests that up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day is generally considered safe for most healthy adults, although everyone’s tolerance is different.
The key is to use caffeine as a tool, not as a replacement for sleep, nutrition, hydration, and healthy daily habits.
Build your foundation first, then let caffeine enhance what you’ve already built.
9. Live With Purpose
One thing I’ve learned is that energy isn’t only physical.
Having goals, something to work toward, and a reason to get out of bed each morning creates a different kind of energy.
Continue learning, challenge yourself, build something, improve your relationships, set goals that excite you, and become a little better every day.
When you have purpose, you naturally bring more energy into your life.
Final Thoughts
There isn’t one magic solution that creates endless energy.
Real energy is built through the small decisions we make every day, better sleep, better food, more movement, morning sunlight, staying hydrated, protecting your peace, using the sauna, using caffeine wisely, and living with purpose.
None of these habits require perfection. They simply require consistency.
Start with one habit, master it, then build from there. Those small improvements, repeated day after day, lead to life-changing results over time.
Our energy is earned by the choices we make every single day. Stay consistent, stay disciplined, and keep investing in yourself. The results will come.
